Weather in Phuket – Patterns and Seasons

The climate in Phuket adheres to distinct patterns that are easily discernible. As divers, we naturally have a vested interest in understanding the weather conditions that may impact our dives. While we favor clear skies and tranquil seas, diving is conducted throughout the year, except in the rare instance of exceptionally adverse conditions.

The 3 Seasons – Cool and Dry, Hot and Dry, Wet

Each year in Phuket presents its own unique weather patterns. Some years experience more rainfall, while certain low seasons may be drier, and even high season months can occasionally be rainy. However, the weather here in Phuket is generally quite pleasant.

The transition to the "wet" season typically occurs between late April and early June. The summer months are usually favorable, with more sunny days than rainy ones, though the weather can be unpredictable, with occasional wet and windy days. Rainfall is typically brief and localized—one area, such as Patong Beach, may experience rain, while just a few kilometers away, places like Karon Beach remain dry.

The "ideal" weather of the high season usually begins in October or November and lasts until April or May. The months from November to February bring slightly cooler temperatures, thanks to the fresh northeast winds, while March and April can be quite hot with minimal wind.

Phuket’s weather cannot be strictly categorized into "high" and "low" seasons, as this often suggests a six-month split of sunshine and rain. In fact, even during high season, some rain is inevitable, and the low season often brings beautiful sunny days. On average, however, you can expect less rain from November to April.

It’s important to note that even during the rainy season or on a particularly wet day in high season, you may encounter more sunshine while out at sea, despite the rain on the island itself. Phuket's mountains rise to over 500 meters, creating conditions that trap clouds and foster thunderstorms. Often, a day of diving will be filled with sunshine, interrupted only by a brief rain shower passing by. You might return to port with a tan, but don’t be surprised if you get a little wet on your way back!

Diving Seasons - THAILAND

Thailand Diving Season (Phuket / Similan Islands)

  • Thailand experiences two main seasons, and we are located in Phuket, on the west coast, with the Andaman Sea as our playground. The Similan Islands, the primary liveaboard destination, are complemented by liveaboards to Myanmar and day trips or overnight excursions to nearby dive sites around Phuket and Phi Phi.

  • The diving season for the Similan Islands runs from November to April, with the Similan Islands National Park officially open from October 15th to May 15th. While some boats only operate between November and April, there are also liveaboards available in late October and early May. For local day trips around Phuket and Phi Phi, diving is available year-round.

  • While the high season generally offers better weather, the period from May to October still provides plenty of good weather mixed with occasional wet days. Hotel prices are significantly lower during this time, and there are ample wet-season diving opportunities from Phuket.

Indonesia Diving Seasons

  • Indonesia is a vast country, so the weather varies across different regions. We offer liveaboard trips in two main areas, each with its own distinct season.

  • For Komodo, trips are available from March to December, with the best time to visit being between June and October, which is the opposite of the Similan Islands season in Thailand. A Komodo trip can also be combined with some relaxation in Bali, as liveaboards depart from either Bali or Labuan Bajo, the latter accessible by a short domestic flight from Bali.

  • On the other hand, Raja Ampat is best visited from November to April, offering an ideal season for diving.
