Diving with Manta Rays

Alongside the elusive whale shark, manta rays are often at the top of every diver’s wish list when visiting Thailand. To encounter one of these graceful giants up close—or even catch a fleeting glimpse—is truly mesmerizing. Gliding effortlessly through the water like birds in flight, mantas move with a silent elegance, reminiscent of eagles riding thermal currents. Frequently found near reef systems, these majestic creatures are not uncommon in Thai waters, offering divers unforgettable moments beneath the surface.

Where to See Manta Rays in Thailand

  • We are lucky enough to see manta rays quite often at several dive sites reached by day trip or liveaboard from Phuket and Khao Lak. The dive sites with most encounters are Koh Bon and Koh Tachai which are found to the north of the Similan Islands. Manta sightings are common through the whole season. Normally best around February – March. No guarantees of course! These 2 sites feature manta ray cleaning stations where smaller fish like wrasse will clean off dead skin, parasites from hovering mantas. We do also see manta rays at Phuket dive sites, especially at Racha Noi Island.

  • Mantas are also found commonly in the more remote Mergui Archipelago in Myanmar, which is north of the Similan and Surin Islands. For the best chance of seeing mantas and the best diving, you should join a liveaboard. Check our website for liveaboards in Thailand and liveaboards in Myanmar.

About The Manta Ray

  • Did you know there are actually two species of manta rays? The more commonly encountered reef manta has a wingspan of around 3–4 meters, while the larger and more majestic oceanic manta averages 4–5 meters, with some individuals reaching up to 6 or even 7 meters in width! We also occasionally spot mobula rays, often referred to as "mini mantas." Though a different species, they share a similar appearance, typically with a wingspan of around 2 meters. Unlike the usually solitary or small-group nature of mantas, mobula rays can be seen traveling in large schools of up to 100 or more.

  • The name manta comes from the Spanish word for "blanket," given by early sailors who were awestruck by their broad, graceful form. Mantas feed on plankton, which they filter through their specialized gills. They're often seen gliding just below the surface, mouth open as they feed—or even performing underwater loops and spins in a graceful display of natural acrobatics.

  • Each manta ray is unique, with individual spot patterns on their white underbellies. Most are black on top and white underneath, but some are almost entirely black, while others have very faint markings. These patterns allow researchers and divers to identify and monitor individuals. To learn more, we highly recommend visiting the Manta Trust, a great resource for manta ray conservation and research.

  • We truly hope to help you experience the unforgettable thrill of diving with a manta ray here in Thailand!

Whaleshark update 2024

  • Whale shark encounters were relatively limited during the 2023–2024 season. The best chances of sightings remained at Richelieu Rock and Koh Tachai, though there were also occasional encounters at Hin Daeng and even local dive sites around Phuket and Phi Phi. Some lucky divers on liveaboard trips over the past few years were fortunate to share the water with these gentle giants. The 2022–2023 season saw slightly more sightings, while 2021 was an exceptional year, especially from March to May 2022, with numerous encounters reported.

  • So far this season, we’ve had a few sightings in the Similan Islands, as well as around Phuket and the Phi Phi Islands. The prime time for whale shark encounters in Thailand is typically February to April.

  • If you're fortunate enough to witness one of these majestic creatures in the wild, it’s an experience you'll never forget. A little excitement is natural—but please resist the urge to touch or ride a whale shark. Passive interaction is far healthier for marine life and helps ensure they remain calm and curious. Often, if you remain still and simply observe, the whale shark may approach you on its own.

  • Interested in diving in Thailand? Get in touch with us—who knows, with a little luck, you might just have your own unforgettable whale shark encounter! Please note that we do not offer dedicated “swim with whale shark” trips. Your best chance of seeing them is on a liveaboard to the Similan Islands and Richelieu Rock.

  • We hope to welcome you aboard soon!
